Loss

Before the dark takes all hope of light
Before the silence is complete
Before the wine has dulled the pain
Before other thoughts have crowded in
I will feel your loss

And once acknowledged that ache won’t
Leave for many hours; for hearts broken
By living children are hardest to mend
It seems, especially when the damage done
Seems hardly worth the loss

So once again I’ll take to the streets
And wander down the dark and stars
And hope to tire my weary soul and rest
My sorrowful heart and try not to resent
The ones I love, the ones who are my loss
